Putting It All Together (with bumps)

Hi Folks Far and Wide!

It has been a cruising start to the year with youth empowerment work in Malaysia, family and fun in Australia, creative conversations for Polio Points, dengue fever throughout my body and also in preparation for departure for Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) program in South Sudan very soon…

This blog post is an attempt to pull all of my blogs into one central spot but to still maintain all the other blogs, each with their specific train of thought and purpose. So if you are a follower of any one of these blogs:

I will now be blogging on each of those blogs but they will always be doubled up on this blog site ( http://teaspoonsofchange.wordpress.com/ ) .

Therefore if you wish to follow all of these blogs at once I suggest you subscribe to the Teaspoons of Change blog ( https://teaspoonsofchange.wordpress.com/2015/02/02/putting-it-all-together-with-bumps/ )!

Lastly I was very lucky to be on a podcast interview with a great guy and purveyor of interesting people doing interesting things – Joel from Smart and Simple Matters and SimpleRev. Our nearly hour-long conversation was a nice chance for me to lay out the patchwork of diverse and passionate things I get to do in life from polio eradication to youth empowerment to living in tiny houses when possible and to anything and everything to ensure I do what I can to see an end to extreme poverty…

Here is a link to the podcast if you are keen and it is a good chance for me to try and tie a few things together and put them in at least one funnel where they can then splash and land as they need from there… http://www.valueofsimple.com/smart-and-simple-matters-podcast-064-happy-simply-darcy-lunn/  Be sure to check out the other amazing podcasts on there as well!

Will be in touch next from all things polio eradication in South Sudan from next week! Hope to add more experiences (and photos) for the next 4 months…

Happy Simply SA in Pictorial/Photo Form

Hi Folks. So this blog site will be kept up on an occasional basis from here on but I thought it would be nice to dedicate the second to last post on a pictorial look at the Happy, simply build in South Australia…

The next post (on the booking process for the Happy, simply home in SA) will be a last one in a little while as I am going on a 1500km walk in Japan for an idea I call Teaspoons of Change… which are personal choices, decisions and actions that have a positive impact on people and the planet one teaspoon at a time… http://teaspoonsofchange.wordpress.com/  https://www.facebook.com/teaspoonsofchange

Happy, simply Left-Overs and Left-To-Do

Day 22 House warming (16)I’m very sorry I haven’t got any new photos to add since the last blog but I do have new information to pass on… Below are a couple of lists: the practical facts and figures of building the Happy, simply home; what still needs to be done; and a small list of needs and wants to finish it off.

In my next blog I will outline what will become of the Happy, simply home – especially now I have abandoned it and left Australia…

In practical terms the home took:

  • 3 days of deconstruction
  • 22 days of construction
  • Around $1000 spent on a few materials and other costs –  – the rest was salvaged, donated, gathered from leftovers, bits and pieces from people and more
  • Over 30 volunteers and around 10 builders
  • Many loaves of bread
  • Over 5000 views on the blog and probably similar on Facebook
  • Wide reaching support, resources, sponsorship, donations and generosity
  • Moved people from a group of people to the status of community!

List of tasks still to be done by anyone still keen to get in, interact and attribute their mark on the project. Plus I know there is very likely to be a solar workshop next weekend or at some stage to put in all the solar features:

  • fill gap in wall of toilet and shelter on the east deck
  • solar system
  • create a fold down desk
  • toilet to be built
  • paint polycoat on stairs and cedar wall, maybe stain or coat the bed – don’t use gloss finish it will make it too slippery
  • ¼ round the edges, door gaps, skirting, etc
  • Joining piece for the flooring
  • Door handles
  • Outside edge flashing if needed / wanted – important bits are done
  • Carpet tiles and/or black plastic under the home to stop weeds growing and so it can be used as storage space
  • Stabilise each corner of the home so not just resting on the original legs of the caravan – use the two axle stands and maybe get a few more besser blocks?
  • Tank stand reinforcement, cleaning and functionality set for human consumption
  • Fridge – I have a spare esky at my mum’s home that can be used but any hole dug in the ground covered will do the trick for the next few months
  • Fitting fly screens
  • Anything else you might want to contribute just check with Beau and Sam from the build and remember simplicity is the key!

List of needs (wants)  for the home:

  • Office chair
  • Compost bins
  • Door handle
  • Solar shower
  • Gas bottle
  • Double mattress under the thin top one we already have
  • Mosquito bed net
  • Wee container – something not see through and 2L is best with a big opening at the top and a lid
  • Fans 12v or small AC fan
  • …?

With all these jobs to be done and things needed (wanted) I personally prefer to live in a place and from that REALLY determine what is needed and then see what might be wanted and go from that basis – rather than guessing beforehand what I think will be needed and wanted (rarely the same list). Since I won’t be back at the Happy, simply home in Aldinga till probably Christmas it would be good to at least forecast a few of these things so it can adequately support anyone staying before then…

Day 22 House warming (7a)

Happy, simply House (warming) Freezing

Day 22 House warming (16)

Not the warmest day in Aldinga ever but the warmth from the community, participants and supporters made it the warmest possible house warming ever…

Day 22 House warming (12)

The temperature was the only indication of the home freezing as it was insulated, warm and loved to make it toasty in and around. I couldn’t imagine anything that could have been warmer and more human than celebrating a community to come together for over a month to recognise the experience – and by the way there was also a home that was a bi-product of that process to show for it…

I know I will sound a little delusional and that usually happens when I am at 10,000 feet on my way from or two my next chapter of life, as I am writing this on a plane back to my ‘normal’ world of global awareness education and social justice.

The house warming day saw the Happy, simply volunteers building feverishly to try and finish as much as possible before the 11am champagne brunch and the 12 open-house celebration. By 11am we were still putting in the floor, adjusting tanks and constructing a temporary front deck but regardless of how complete we were we put tools down at noon to join a bunch of supporters, family and others to stop time and take note of the wonderful contribution of humans to put together a community project that produced a self-sufficient home.

This is what Happy, simply epitomises for me – bringing community, collectivism, cooperation, connection together to create shared time and experiences. Anyone who has ever done something collectively will know the post reflection and recognition of what was achieved when people come together behind a shared goal, identity or project.

For me the best things in life are not things and I have never seen Happy, simply as a project to build a house it is a community project to create an opportunity to learn, share and interact with people, a project to build a community – that happens to produce a house.

Day 22 House warming (13)
I love the Happy, simply home not because it is beautiful or a tangible object that I will live in and share with others but because it was made with others who got to know each other and create quality rich experiences and friendships.

At this point I could go into a big Oscar speech of listing people, thanking them and being acknowledged myself but anyone who was a part of the Happy, simply experience – weather following online, making food for the project, donating materials, donating their skills and expertise or being there to use their hands and head to produce the home all walk away with some form of self-appreciation for their part in the Happy, simply project.

Day 22 House warming (11)

Popping the cork to ‘officially’ (prematurely) open the Happy, simply South Australia home!

We were all just as important and insignificant as each other and we now have something to show for our combined time and efforts that not only means something to us but to anyone who interacts with Happy, simply – a sustainable lifestyle model and education project.

Enough rare-air rambling but I can say I am extremely thankful to all who have been a part of the experience and feel proud in what we have achieved but best of all is I walk away with a group of new friends and a rich experience that will last with me for a lifetime.

Day 22 happy simply family

Infinite gratitude, love, happiness and thanks to all who have stepped into the Happy, simply space in the past 6-8 weeks – time for me to step away from the building space and back into the comforts of education, empowerment, global citizenship and youth inspiration for seeing an end to extreme poverty and a happy simple world for all.

Super thanks to all and I’ll follow up with a more practical blog on where to from here for the Happy, simply South Australia home…

Day 22

If you want to keep in touch with my propaganda in my other life of global education and social justice…

Please feel free to use any ideas, resources, information and inspiration from Happy, simply and just get in touch if there is anything specific you would like to know…

Happy, simply became a HOME today

Happy, simply became a home today.

Cladding inside painted, toilet shelter completed, front deck on and most impressively we have custom made steps, ladder and bed rail!!! To see how that was put together have a look at the youtube clip here:

With just a couple of days left before I head off I think the Happy, simply home will be almost 90% done… I plan to stay in it tomorrow night anyway!

See you on Sunday for the open day? https://www.facebook.com/events/1434264183502485

A Happy, Happy, Simply, Presentation

Back on the build again yesterday with ceiling and cladding happening after a day off presenting and sharing the Happy, simply idea and practicality since it is: Happy, simply – a sustainable lifestyle model and education project.

On Friday evening the Adelaide City Council in conjunction with the new Adelaide City Library hosted the Happy, simply presentation organised by the Adelaide Sustainable Building Network (ASBN).

With 30 RSVPs you never know how many you will get on a cold and damp Adelaide evening but in the end we had over 60 people there.

It was a lovely mix of people, those:

  • keen on building,
  • those with an environmental interest,
  • people wanting to build their own home
  • people who know they will never afford a ‘normal’ modern day home
  • who have been involved in the building of the home – volunteers, builders, associations, collaborators and more
  • friends and family who had to be there because I told them to!
  • people who happened to be in the library!

HS Presentation (1)

There were also a number of great conversations around simplicity, happiness, sustainability and how to live a more affordable but fulfilling life…

Only one more week to go in the building (well until I head off overseas) so we will see how far we get…!

What’s it all about?

This presentation will explore the ideas of simplicity, self-sufficiency and sustainability.

AAEV Day 06 (17)d’Arcy Lunn will talk about his own project ‘Happy, simply’: a sustainable lifestyle model and education project promoting simplicity, sustainability and self-sufficiency. The end product: a ‘tiny house’ built for less than $2,000!

What will we cover?

  • The components and a holistic approach to a happy, simple life – where the ideas came from and the practical application of simplicity – where less is more and just enough is plenty.
  • OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe “Happy, simply” home – how to build a 10m2 home in 2 weeks and for under $2,000. This involves considering design, materials, building and resource consent, water capture, renewable energy, bio-compostable toilet, edible garden, transport and community participation.
  • Take away ideas and the practical application of simplistic, self-sufficient and sustainable living practices – it will be a matter of laying it all out on the table for people to choose, adapt and modify what is useful and practical to them
  • A detailed look at the new Happy, simply home built in Aldinga just before this event!

Who will be teaching?

Sharing the Happy, simply idea with a group at Laneways Learning in Melbourne

Sharing the Happy, simply idea with a group at Laneways Learning in Melbourne

d’Arcy Lunn is enriched and enthusiastic about simple living. ‘Happy, simply’ came after 14 years and 64 countries of learning and experiencing that less can be more (when you get to choose it). For him the project and this workshop is about sharing the learning he has received from his experiences around the world and applying them at home in SA, where we can choose sustainability, self-sufficiency and simplicity and be richer for it.

Check out blog for more about the project in SA – https://happysimply.wordpress.com/and the Happy, simply SA facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/happysimplysa/

– Friday 13 June 6-7pm and then beers after at the Metro on Grote St – see below for all the details!

Back to the Build (tomorrow)!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHi Folks and a Happy, simply happy day to you all!

We are back building again tomorrow. I have to say we are still struggling to find all the bits and pieces but at least know where we can buy them as we need them… so still keep an eye out for materials – see below but in particular plywood sheets, insulation and roof rafters.

Building will now be everyday till completion (hopefully June 9!). Tomorrow and for a couple of days will be putting the wall frames together and then we move into wrapping the building with our amazing gor-tex like wrap from Laros. From there is it a matter of outside cladding, roofing, windows, doors, insulation, inside cladding, solar and more…!

A reminder of important info for volunteering:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Happy, simply home SA – FYI Volunteers!

An email to the people who have already put up their hand to help out or who might be keen to help out!

I am sad to be back in Australia after 5 weeks living in the wonderful Happy, simply home in Aotearoa New Zealand, but happy to be building another one in Australia!.

Here is the big update for the Happy, simply home on how the building schedule will look (more or probably – less)!

The essential idea of Happy, simply is not necessarily the end product but the process it is built so please see the schedule as a rough guide and an atmosphere of learning and sharing. This is not a professional workshop but more a chance for everyone to have a go and build a home together (with a few wise and experienced hands about the place).

Your efforts are going to be greatly appreciated and I can guarantee your learning and happiness will match your help and more! Plus once finished the Happy, simply home is open for all to experience a night or two in happy, simplicity!

See below for more details! Also keep in touch on the blog: https://happysimply.wordpress.com, the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/happysimplysa/ and the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/382302941912081/

Cheers, d’Arcy. (Beau, Lindsay, Sam, Charlie and more!)

So here is the nitty gritty of the building component of the Happy, simply home in South Australia. However I do have to point out that the nature of a community project like this will mean materials will vary, plans will change and the outline below will probably not be exact to the day. But no matter what we will have some kind of home built by 8 June!

See below for timeline, logistics, skills you will acquire and more… and please keep in touch with the blog the Happy, simply Facebook page, share this with others who might be keen to join in on the Happy, simply Facebookevent page and see the short youtube clip from last year’s Happy, simply building project in Aotearoa New Zealand : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl8safGwXhQ

What people will learn! An outline of what people will learn and what they walk away with. What can they expect?

Keywords and interests here are: building, design, architecture, sustainability, simplicity, community, self-sufficiency and where less is more and just enough is plenty!

But really this is a building and design project to learn why and how to design and build a house in the most simple step-by-step way with maximum sustainability.

  • d’Arcy – usually overseas working in remote areas in aid and development and never too far away from email –  happysimplyhome@gmail.com or if he is in NZ: 022 410 8988
  • Nicola – usually in Wellington and is the occasional caretaker (omit)
  • Justine – who’s property it is  (omit)

– Keys

  • (omit)
  • Green key: catflap door (upper lock not handle lock), purple key: large sliding door, other two keys: bike locks

–  Toilet

  • The composting toilet is not yet ready for use, we hope to build a small shelter on the back deck with extra door into the home but alas not yet! Take on the project maybe?
  • Until it is ready you have two options for number 2’s (faecal matter [poo {shit}]):

o   Public toilets – park a few blocks to the right towards the beach and soccer ground; either end of Wellington road (road Happy, simply is on) – left, until the main road (Beach Rd) on the corner on the right hand side; or – right, go all the way to the end to Queen Elizabeth park or opposite the holiday park;

o   Compost toilet at the back of Justine’s car shed in emergencies;

  • As for number 1’s (urine [wee {piss}]) you can do in the blue pee pot inside but make sure you dilute with lots of water and spread out in the garden where there is lots of carbon (leaves, vegetation, not the lawn)
  • Remember over a billion people don’t have access to a toilet and shitting into drinking water is a pretty crazy concept, hope to have the compost loo ready soon!

– Water

  • The blue rainwater tank is clean and beautiful rain water. I also put a little waterguard solution in once every 6 months just in case but it is much cleaner and better for you (and the environment) than tap or bottled water.
  • Feel free to put bubbles in your water with soda machine!
  • If you happen to run out of water (why?) there is a tap near the footpath with safe water but there shouldn’t be any need for it unless there is a long drought or overuse!

– Solar / electrics

  • It is only one smallish 95W solar panel on the top feeding onto a series of 7amp batteries in the home (stats for the solar nerds).
  • There is a converter so one power point can be used and two USB chargers and a car socket charger

o   Only use electrical items that draw less than 100w (basically simple electronics – phones, laptops, etc but nothing that produces heat.

o   LED lights will keep you going all night and a torch or something might be needed for the loft

o   Best to charge laptops and things during the day when charge is the highest, trying to charge laptops at night can draw on the limited amount in batteries

o   The green indicator lights will be 5 when the sun is out and at full charge, it will drop to 3 lights quite quickly but don’t worry you still have enough light for probably the entire night!

o   It will then slowly drop to 2 and one and eventually red-ish colour which means you are on your last legs

o   If it runs out then light a candle and enjoy the atmosphere!

– Cooking

  • There is a gas bottle and stove under a bucket under the outdoor kitchen wooden thingy, just light a match turn the knob and you are cooking with gas!

o   It is safe to use inside but do it on a piece of carpet or slate

o   If you run out of gas you can get more at the Paekakariki general store – $5 but it will take a day

o   If you have used the burner then please leave some koha for the gas

  • There is also a small alcohol burner (you can also use methalyted spirits), just be very careful not to knock over this stove or you will have a fire to deal with

– Heating

  • There is no heating currently in the home – due to insulation, the home stays a few degrees warmer than outside and if very cold boil some water, have something to eat and do some push ups 🙂
  • There is a thick down duvet so it’s toasty at night and extra blankets in the couch/bed

– Showering

  • There are a couple of pallets at the back of the home – that is the showering area
  • There is a solar shower (black bag with hose on the end) fill it about half full put in the sun and have a shower just after the hottest part of the day

o   Use a hook to hang the solar shower bag from the window seal of the highest window then put the hose into the hook near the wire hanger, turn on and you will get a shower effect! It will be fresh no matter what but invigorating and I personally enjoy it. When it is cold out go for a walk, run, ride get a sweat up and then take a shower and cool off!

  • Alternatively: go and ask at the caravan park for a shower and they may get you to pay a few dollars; heat up some water and bucket shower; go to Paraparaumu to the pool for a swim and a hot shower; or swim in the ocean – I think it counts as a bath!

– Food waste, Worms and Chooks

  • There is a tiny worm farm under the house – give them coffee and simple food scraps – no citrus, onion, meet, diary or bread, those and lots of food scraps can go to Justine’s chooks – down near the shed.

– Bicycles

  • There are (usually) two bicycles available if you are keen for a ride. I love and use them a lot so please look after them but still ride them as hard as you like!
  • I’m 6ft1” (183cm) and they both fit me but can be lowered to fit shorter people and youth as well
  • There is some bike stuff in the bottom self on the tall shelves in the home – pump, repair kit, spare tube, chain oil (you only need a little)
  • The bikes get used by the community from time to time so there is no guarantee that one, both or any will be there but they are usually there – just ask in your request
  • Use the locks and there are keys with the home keys

– Garden

  • There are two gardens: one in front of the sliding door and another up by the footpath
  • Depending on season, who has been there, who has time, etc there is often a lovely little vegetable garden and some flowers
  • Help yourself to what the garden has to offer – herbs, tomatoes, silverbeat, beans, whatever, but leave some for the next person
  • Please give it love and attention if you want and add any veges, flowers, herbs, etc – flowers really brighten up the place and it’s a nice thing to pass onto future visitors

– Mozzies

  • There are heaps when it is warm and a few when its cold – please be careful of the mozzie net above the bed as it is hooked onto some tiny hooks on the ceiling and can tear easily
  • There is a citronella candle (in a blue bowl) good to burn for an hour at dusk when they come in hungry

Lots of maps in the desk as well as books, reading, card game, atlas, snakes & ladders, etc…

Please feel free to make little adaptations and smart ideas – we love it when we see little touches that make a difference. If you have a bigger idea that would be great too, just check with us first… Above all enjoy your stay and I hope there are some ideas you take with you!?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
